Probe tip lifetime and contact reliability

A spring-loaded test needle can survive far more than 30,000 operations under controlled conditions. So why does Sensepeek specify 30,000 cycles?

Because a probe tip is not useful simply because the spring still moves. It has to continue making a clean, repeatable electrical contact on real circuit boards, through thousands of measurements, repositioning and contact surfaces.

100,000 cycles is a laboratory number

Mechanical cycle-life figures of 100,000 cycles are typically associated with controlled test conditions: correct alignment, recommended working stroke, clean contact surfaces and limited side loading.

Real probing is different. A fine probe tip meets solder, copper, component leads, test pads and sometimes less-than-perfect surfaces. The needle is repositioned by hand, contact angles vary and the sharp contact point gradually wears.

Contact quality matters more than movement

After many thousands of contacts, a needle may still compress and return normally while the gold-plated contact point has begun to wear. At that stage the important question is no longer whether the mechanism moves, but whether every measurement starts with the same reliable electrical contact.

That is why we use 30,000 cycles as the rated service life. It is a deliberately practical specification intended to represent dependable use, not the highest cycle count that can be achieved under ideal conditions.

30,000 cycles. On purpose.

A lower published number is not a lower-quality needle. It is a more conservative maintenance point.

For Sensepeek probes, the needle is intentionally replaceable. The spring-loaded tip is a small mechanical interface between the probe and the board, so replacing that wear part is preferable to letting gradual tip wear become a measurement variable.

Replacement takes only a few seconds

Pull out the used needle, insert a new one and continue measuring. No soldering, calibration procedure or probe disassembly is required.

Three steps to replace a probe needle: find the needle at the tip, pull it out with pliers, then push a new one in.

PCBITE-7002 is supplied as a pack of five replacement needles and is compatible with SQ10, SQ100, SQ200, SQ350, SQ500, SP10, SP100 and SP200 probes.

A specification you can plan around

For production, lab and development work, predictable maintenance is more useful than an optimistic headline number. Our 30,000-cycle rating gives a clear point at which the contact element can be renewed before wear becomes part of the measurement.

The needle is inexpensive, the replacement is fast, and the probe itself stays in service.
